Planning a Maasai Mara safari and wondering about the best time to visit the Maasai Mara? The answer depends on what you want to see. You might want the Great Wildebeest Migration, peaceful game drives with fewer people, or good wildlife photography. The Mara offers something worthwhile all year.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve sits in southwestern Kenya and is one of Africa’s best-known safari destinations. It is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) and a huge variety of other wildlife, so every season rewards you in its own way.

July to October: the Great Wildebeest Migration

For many visitors this is the best time to visit the Maasai Mara. Between July and October, over a million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, move from Tanzania’s Serengeti into the Mara in search of fresh grazing. The highlight is the dramatic Mara River crossings, where crocodiles wait and predators such as lions, cheetahs and leopards follow the herds. Every game drive could bring a remarkable encounter.

It is also the busiest time of year, so book your safari and accommodation several months ahead. This season suits the Migration, Big Five game drives, first-time visitors, wildlife photography and bucket-list safaris.

November to December: the green season begins

When the short rains arrive, the Mara turns a vivid green. The reserve gets quieter and the safari feels more relaxed, while wildlife viewing stays excellent. Animals remain easy to spot because many species stay in the reserve all year. The fresh scenery, dramatic clouds and soft light appeal to photographers, and with fewer visitors you often get less crowded game drives. This season suits scenic views, photography, birdwatching and anyone who wants fewer crowds.

January to March: excellent wildlife viewing

Many experienced safari-goers consider January to March one of the best-kept secrets of the Mara. Rainfall is generally low, the vegetation is manageable and wildlife viewing is outstanding. Predators are very active, and many plains animals give birth, which brings young wildlife and natural predator and prey encounters. The weather is typically warm and pleasant, so game drives are comfortable all day. It suits visitors who want exceptional sightings without peak-season crowds: Big Five sightings, predator action, family safaris, comfortable weather and photography.

April to May: the quiet season

April and May bring the long rains and turn the Mara lush and green. Showers do fall, but they often come in the afternoon or overnight, leaving plenty of time for good game drives. It is the least crowded time of year, ideal if you value tranquillity and do not mind a little rain. Many lodges offer attractive seasonal rates, which makes it one of the most affordable times to visit. The scenery, fresh air and dramatic skies give a very different view of the reserve. It suits budget-conscious travellers, peaceful safaris, green scenery and scenery photography.

Wildlife you can see all year

Unlike places that reward you only in migration season, the Mara offers excellent wildlife viewing all year. Depending on the season you may see lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, wildebeest, many antelope species and over 500 species of birds. No two game drives are the same.

Choosing the best time to visit the Maasai Mara

The right season depends on your goals. If witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration is your priority, plan your safari between July and October. If you prefer fewer visitors, lower prices and lush scenery, the green seasons from November to May offer good value and memorable wildlife. For outstanding all-round game viewing with pleasant weather, January to March is an exceptional choice.
