Kenya has many great safari destinations, but two parks top most wish lists: the Maasai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park. Each has its own scenery, wildlife and feel. Choosing between the Maasai Mara and Amboseli comes down to what you most want to see.
Wildlife in the Maasai Mara and Amboseli
The Maasai Mara is famous for its concentration of wildlife. You have excellent chances of seeing lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and buffalo, and sometimes rhinos, plus thousands of wildebeest during the Great Migration. The open grasslands make animals easy to spot all year.
Amboseli is best known for its large elephant herds, many with impressive tusks. You can also see lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos and hundreds of bird species.
Scenery
In the Mara, rolling golden savannah stretches as far as you can see, which gives you the classic African safari scenery. Amboseli offers one of Africa’s most iconic views, with wildlife roaming beneath the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Many photographers consider it Kenya’s most beautiful safari backdrop.
Best time to visit the Maasai Mara and Amboseli
The Mara is excellent year-round, with peak season from July to October during the Great Migration. Amboseli is good throughout the year, and wildlife viewing is best in the dry seasons, June to October and January to February.
Which park is better?
Choose the Maasai Mara if you want the Big Five, the Great Migration, predator sightings and classic African safari scenery. Choose Amboseli if you want close encounters with elephants, stunning Kilimanjaro views, great photography and a quieter safari.
